On Sunday 20 December 2015, Reigate resident Steve Murphy set off on the world’s toughest row and ultimate test in mental and physical endurance, the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, as a solo rower to raise money for YMCA East Surrey.
Steve battled 30–50 ft waves, huge storms, intense heat, physical and mental fatigue, sleep deprivation and salt sores to reach his goal in Antigua on Thursday 10 March. A total of 80 days 20 hrs & 39 mins at sea!
The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is one of the world’s toughest nautical challenges – more people have been into space, or climbed Everest than have rowed the Atlantic. The race is 3,000 nautical miles heading west from the Canary Islands all the way to Antigua.

About Steve
Steve is no stranger to endurance challenges and in 2013 ran from John O’Groats to Land’s End and raised over £10,000 for the YMCA’s charitable work with vulnerable young people.
He has also run across the North Pole and the Sahara.
Now he has raised that bar and sponsorship even higher by rowing across the Atlantic.
Thank you!
Steve has done so much for YMCA East Surrey and we are hugely grateful for his determination and support – thank you Steve!
