The benefits of physical activity
Exercise can significantly improve your physical wellbeing, as well as life expectancy.
It helps:
- Manage weight and weight loss
- Strengthen bones and muscles
- Regulate blood pressure
- Improve respiratory function
- Maintain or improve mobility and flexibility
- Reduce sedentary behaviour
It can also prevent or manage:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Type 2 diabetes
- Cholesterol
- The risk of falling as an older adult
Physical activity also has a positive effect on an individual’s mental wellbeing. It increases mood, relaxation and release from daily stress and anxiety. By working towards personal goals, exercise can also give you a renewed sense of purpose in life.
Exercise Referral classes
Staff
YMCA East Surrey’s Exercise Referral team have many years experience and are professionally qualified in supporting people with any disability or health condition.
Our instructors can also hold additional classes in Residential Homes and Day Centres or for groups of people with disabilities.
Cost
We offer several payment options, from pay-as-you-go to monthly memberships, with various rates dependant on personal circumstances.
Exercise Referral consultation
All new Exercise Referral members (premium and basic) must complete an ER consultation at a cost of £15 before the membership can be started. This covers your initial one to one consultation, gym induction and personalised programme of exercise with one of our exercise referral specialists. During your initial consultation we will discuss your referral, previous medical history and medication as well as discuss your exercise goals. You will then book a suitable time to have your one to one induction and personalised programme of exercise in the gym.
YMCA Fitness Centre
Our centre is fully inclusive, so everyone can enjoy the benefits of physical activity. Seats can be removed from exercise stations for wheelchair access and controls are larger and brightly coloured for those with visual impairment.
